WELCOME to our site"Nemagari Walking Pole"

What is "Nemagari Walking Pole"?
Nemagari Walking Pole is one of a kind, the very first walking pole in the world made of a sort of bamboo, Nemagari-dake. It is a patent pending novelty item, all hand-made.
Features
The material, nemagari-dake, native to northern part in Japan, are curved originally. They are flexible, but very strong, contrary to the appearance. Nemagari-dake is tough plant, it does not break but bends under the snow in the mountains.
Nemagari Walking Pole curves on the lower shaft. This curving absorbs the shock when the pole comes in contact with the ground. And by rolling the flexible stick, you can get the kinetic energy to move forward yourself naturally allowing you to walk further with less fatigue. (less stress on your joints and your muscles)
Nemagari Walking Pole is very light. It weighs around one hundred grams, it is very strong though.
Nemagari Walking Pole is equipped with leather wrist strap and rubber tips.
Nemagari Walking Pole is eco-friendly, because most of the parts are made of natural materials.
Nemagari Walking Poles come in various length.

The Clay Figurines

The exhibition, “The Clay Figurines of Northern Japan” is now being held in Historical Museum of Hokkaido. http://www.hmh.pref.hokkaido.jp
Some pieces designated as National Treasure are displayed. The purpose of the clay figurines is still in mystery. For toys, ornaments, fetish, goddess, or lucky charm,,,,,? Each figurine is so expressive. I felt a kind of strong power or prayer of people in Jomon period, about 10000 years ago. Since ancient times, Japanese people have been praying for their loved ones.
We’ll pray for the victims on the first anniversary of Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

Sapporo Snow Festival
One of the attractive events in Sapporo Snow Festival is “International Snow Sculpture Contest”. 16 teams from various countries and regions in the world participated in the contest. Yesterday the award ceremony was held. This year Hong Kong team won the first prize. Their work is “Leaping Dragon”. The Dragon is really awesome! I wonder how they formed the beautifully curved dragon shape. Chinese dragon is a symbol of power, strength and good luck. The Hong Kong team created the statue with a wish for world peace and dragon-like prosperity in coming years.
Other works are also superb! Each sculpture reveals their each national character of the artists. If you have chance to come to Sapporo now, please come and see the wonderful sculptures in the International Corner after you see the large snow sculptures constructed by the Self-Defense Forces.
SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL
The 39th International Snow Sculpture Contest
This large ice sculpture was made based on the design applied for the contest by a schoolgirl whose elementary school was broken according to the March 11 earthquake. The title is "The castle of the dream for animals". This is also excellent. You can’t miss it,either.

Snow

When I was on the train departing from Shin Chitose Airport the other day, I heard high-pitched voice from a back seat. “Wow! Look! Snow, snow all around in the field! How beautiful!” The teenaged girls were busy crying out excitedly and taking photos of the scenery from the train window. One of the girls muttered, “I wonder what snow shoveling is like.”
This season, we have more snow than usual here in Hokkaido, especially in Iwamizawa City where the Self-Defense Forces is helping with the snow-removal work at the request of the municipality this year.
It may be interesting that some tours to Hokkaido include snow shoveling experience. In sparsely populated towns or villages, voluntary workers to remove snow are welcome, because the most of the residents are aged. The town also might be lively by the communication between the residents and tourists.
Now The Self-defense Forces is also making large snow statues for Sapporo Snow Festival held in early Feb. at Odori Park.

Ecoーfriendly

This is a postcard, but it isn’t an ordinary card. I mean the material is uncommon. It was made of husk of corns that are sold at what we call “Tokibi Wagons” (sweetcorn vendors, tokibi is sweetcorn in Hokkaido dialect) at Odori Park in Sapporo City. The postcard company is 工房アルティスタ http://homepage3.nifty.com/kobo-artista/.
It is a great idea of recycling stuff that would go to garbage bin. Our Nemagari Walking Poles are made of bamboo that is cut down to be thrown away. Both are eco-friendly products born in Hokkaido!

“Tokibi Wagons” has been one of the summer attractions in Sapporo managed by Sapporo Tourist Association since 1967. However, the sales have been slow recently and I heard they are even talking about whether to continue the stalls or not.
Once you are in Sapporo, you can’t miss having fresh, tasty tokibi. How about getting tokibi at “Tokibi Wagons” and strolling in Odori Park with a pair of Nemagari Walking Poles?

Sunflower Season is here!
One of the sunflower came out for the first time this year! Little, adorable bright yellow flower is smiling in my garden. This summer I have enjoyed myself growing several kinds of summer flowers such as lily, petunia, lavender, gladiolus, etc. They were beautiful and fascinating, and at last my favorite summer flower, sunflower bloomed. They say the language of flowers for sunflower is “pure and lofty thoughts”. I started my blog today, with lofty aim,,,,,,,mmm, I’m not sure. Well, anyway I am going to write my daily happenings. This is my first diary in English!
